Our Purpose & Our Duty
Growing in faith. Serving one another. Preparing the next generation.
This Sabbath at Body of Christ Fellowship in Calvert City, Kentucky, we were reminded that purpose is not found by standing still. It grows as we learn, serve, forgive, and help one another walk more closely with God. From the centurion’s extraordinary faith to the active role of our young people, the day’s lessons pointed us toward a faith that is lived—not merely heard.
Faith That Understood Authority
Bible study led by Skip Martin · Matthew 8:5–13 and Luke 7:1–10
Skip led us through the healing of a Roman centurion’s servant in Capernaum. Although the centurion was a Gentile and an officer of Rome, he recognized something many others had missed: Jesus did not need to enter his home or even stand beside the sick servant. One word was enough.
Extraordinary faith: Jesus marveled at the trust shown by an outsider, saying He had not found such great faith in Israel.
A clear view of authority: As a military officer, the centurion understood the power of a command. He trusted that sickness itself was subject to Jesus’ word.
Genuine humility: Though he held earthly authority, the centurion did not consider himself worthy for Jesus to enter his home.
A wider invitation: Jesus spoke of people coming from east and west to sit in the Kingdom, pointing ahead to the gathering of people from every nation.
Why do Matthew and Luke describe the conversation differently? Matthew presents the centurion’s request directly, while Luke explains that Jewish elders and friends carried the message. In the culture of the time, an authorized representative spoke on behalf of the sender. Matthew gives the centurion’s request; Luke gives the additional details of how it reached Jesus.
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow…”
Jonah led our reflection from Matthew 6:34, turning our attention away from tomorrow’s worries and back toward faithfulness in the day God has placed before us.
Our Purpose, Our Duty
Jasmine began with a searching question: What is our responsibility as baptized members of the Body? Ecclesiastes 12:9–14 grounded the conversation in the “whole duty” of humanity—to fear God and keep His commandments. That duty is personal, but it is not private. What we learn should shape how we live and how we help others grow.
Knowledge should lead to service
Before teaching or speaking about a subject, we should take time to understand it. Yet knowledge is not meant to stop with us. Jasmine asked how we can help those who are still learning, those who have not been baptized, and especially the young people who are still finding their footing in their walk with God.
Revelation 3:15–17 offered a warning against becoming lukewarm or believing we have no need to grow. A living faith keeps moving. It seeks truth, accepts correction, and reaches toward people who need encouragement.
Learning to approach God together
While reflecting on Isaiah 31:1–3, Jasmine spoke honestly about one of her own early struggles: not knowing how to pray or how to begin talking with God. A congregation member shared a similar experience from coming into Christianity as a teenager and feeling that her prayers were not “good enough.” Their stories reminded us why relationships within the congregation matter. Sometimes a young person’s first step is simply asking a trusted adult to pray with them.
Support, forgiveness, and faithful action
Galatians 6:1–5 showed the importance of restoring one another gently and helping carry burdens. We are stronger when no one is expected to walk alone.
Lacy read 2 Corinthians 2:5–11 as the discussion turned toward conflict and forgiveness. Disagreements will happen—even among close friends—but bitterness does not have to be the end of the story. Forgiveness, correction, and restoration are part of learning how to live together in the Body.
Lilly read Colossians 2:4–6, calling us to remain grounded and continue walking in the truth we have received. James 3:2–3 reminded us to handle our words and conduct carefully. James 1:21–24 called us to be doers rather than hearers only, and James 2:14–26 made the point unmistakable: faith without works is dead.
We are training—not sidelining—the next generation.
Members reflected on generations of young people who left churches after being treated as though they should be seen but not heard. At BOCF, our youth are not simply relegated to a back room. They read Scripture, ask questions, take part in the main message, pray with others, rehearse, create, and learn by doing. Participation gives them ownership. Ownership helps them put down roots. Our duty is not only to teach today’s children—it is to prepare the people who will carry the work forward tomorrow.
