Watching. Caring. Saving.

Living as Lifeguards for One Another in Christ

This Sabbath at The Body of Christ Fellowship at Vaughn’s Chapel, our fellowship gathered around a simple but challenging truth: followers of Christ are not meant to stand safely on the shore while others struggle in the water. We are called to notice, to care, and to act.

From our online Bible study to our main message, scripture reflection, worship, and children’s lesson, the theme of loving others intentionally echoed throughout the day.

๐ŸŒŠ Morning Online Bible Group

Hosted by Skip Martin

Our morning online gathering began not with discussion, but with prayer.

Together we reflected on the model prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13, where Jesus teaches His disciples how to approach the Father with reverence, trust, forgiveness, and dependence upon His provision.

We also spent time in Psalm 23, allowing David’s familiar words to remind us that even in uncertain seasons, our Shepherd continues to lead, restore, and guide His people.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” โ€” Psalm 23:1

Prayer is often where spiritual rescue begins. Before we can help carry the burdens of others, we must first stay close to the One who carries ours.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Main Message: “A Lifeguard’s Duty”

Presented by Sarah Brower

Sarah’s message invited us to think of the church through the lens of a lifeguard station.

A lifeguard does not ignore someone struggling in the water.

A lifeguard remains alert.

A lifeguard watches carefully.

A lifeguard moves toward danger rather than away from it.

Most importantly, a lifeguard values every life enough to act.

The message explored how believers are called to become spiritual lifeguards for one another โ€” noticing those drifting in discouragement, isolation, temptation, grief, or spiritual exhaustion and responding with compassion rather than indifference.

Several scriptures helped shape this picture:

Matthew 18:14

“Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.”

John 3:16

God’s love is not passive love. It is active, sacrificial, and pursuing.

Ezekiel 33:11

“I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live.”

1 Timothy 2:4

God desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.

Together these passages remind us that God’s heart has always been directed toward rescue and restoration.

As members of Christ’s body, we are called to share that same heart.

Sometimes being a lifeguard means offering encouragement.

Sometimes it means making a phone call.

Sometimes it means listening.

Sometimes it means gently warning a brother or sister who is drifting.

And sometimes it simply means refusing to let someone struggle alone.

โค๏ธ Scripture Reflection

Everett Mounts

Theme: Cultivating Authentic Relationships

Everett’s reflection centered on Galatians 6:1-2 and Romans 12:9-16, encouraging us to build genuine relationships rooted in humility, patience, and service.

The challenge presented to the congregation was simple but powerful:

“How can I actively bear the burdens of a brother or sister in Christ this week?”

Bearing burdens was never intended to be a solo assignment. Scripture calls believers to walk alongside one another through joys, sorrows, victories, and hardships.

Authentic fellowship grows when we move beyond simply attending together and begin truly caring for one another.

๐ŸŽถ Songs of Worship

Our congregation lifted our voices together in worship through:

  • “Oh Death” โ€” MercyMe
  • “Where Could I Go”
  • “I Saw the Light”
  • “Here I Am, Lord”

Thank you to Reda Brower for leading worship this Sabbath.

๐Ÿ”Ž Kids Class: A Biblical Mystery

Teacher: Devan Mounts

Our younger members became detectives for the day during a fun murder mystery themed lesson centered around the Sixth Commandment and Paul’s instruction:

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil.” โ€” Romans 12:17

Through clues, discussion, and investigation, the children explored an important biblical principle:

God calls His people to respond differently than the world responds.

Justice belongs to God, while believers are called to choose mercy, forgiveness, and righteousness even when wronged.

The mystery may have been fictional, but the lesson was very real.

๐ŸŒ… Final Reflection

This Sabbath left us with an important question:

Are we simply enjoying the view from shore, or are we willing to step toward those who are struggling?

Christ came seeking the lost.

He entered the storm.

He walked toward the hurting.

And as His followers, we are invited to do the same.

May we go into this week watching carefully, loving deeply, and serving faithfully โ€” becoming spiritual lifeguards who help point others toward the safety found in Christ.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2
